Species Profiles: Budgerigars (Budgies)/Parakeetsby Jessica Pineda
Scientific Name: Melopsittacus undulatus
Size: 7 inches from head to tail.
Life Span: 5 to 8 years is the norm, but some live as long as 12 years in captivity.
Physical Description: In the wild, they have a pale green body and a yellow head with black bars and dots on each side of the face. In non-wild budgies, there are many different color mutations available.
Habitat: Arid and semi-arid regions, which include open woodland, savanna, grasslands, scrub and farmlands.
Food: A pellet prepared for budgies, as well as fruits and veggies. Some seed is also recommended.
Enclosure Needs: A minimum cage that is 24 inches long and 24 inches tall. Make sure there is a pull-out tray to make cleaning the bottom easier, and provide fresh food and water daily. Offer multiple perches that are not too thick for your budgie’s feet to grasp. This intelligent bird needs mental stimulation as well as physical, so toys are a must.
